Short History

The International Conference on Electromechanical and Power Systems - SIELMEN has arrived in 2007 at the sixth edition.

The biannual conference has started in 1997, following the initiative of three electrical engineering faculties, from as many universities: Faculty for Electrical Engineering within the Technical University "Gh. Asachi" Iaşi, Faculty for Electromechanical Engineering within the University of Craiova and Faculty of Energetics within the Technical University of Moldavia, Republic of Moldavia. The same institutions organize, since the beginning the conference.

This year there are 10 years from the first edition. During this period, the conference took place, without exception, every two years.

The "parents" of the conference are prof.dr.eng.Dr.H.C. Lorin CANTEMIR, prof.dr.eng. Dr.H.C. Aurel CÂMPEANU, prof.dr.eng. Tudor AMBROS and prof.dr.eng. Petru TODOS. The main objective was to reestablish and to grow up the contacts of the romanian electrical school with our brothers from the other side of Prut river. The conference was only one way of sustaining their ideals, together with lectures and participation to the Licence Commissions. The conference followed to catch the attention of the specialists from all Romanian universities, as well as from the romanian industry, in order to rise the contacts with our colleagues from Republic of Moldavia.

The first edition, having as name the International Conference on Electromechanical Systems - SIELMEC, was held in 1997. At its end, due to the identification of enlarging the topics, was decided that the following edition will treat the power systems too, so the name become the present one. Since then other four editions were held, in 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005. All the editions were held at Chişinău, within the halls of the Technical University of Moldavia, that encouraged and supported with enthusiasm this conference.

The prestige and the attraction of the conference grew up continuously, as the number of papers and participants. In 2003 and 2005 all the university centres from Romania, traditional ones, large or small, new ones, have participated with, at least, one participant.

In the following picture is depicted the evolution of the number of accepted papers and authors for the five precedent editions (for 1999 edition the information is missing).

The growing prestige of the conference could be confirmed by the participation of some remarkable personalities: Acad. I. KOPÎLOV (Technical University Moscow), Acad. Boris DRAGANOV (National University Kiev), Acad. Ion BOSTAN (Technical University of Moldavia), Acad. Toma DORDEA (Technical University Timişoara), Acad. Gleb DRAGAN (Romanian Academy), Prof.dr.eng. Ion PARASCHIVOIU (ETS Montreal).
